My three favorite things about Absolute Beginners 4th Anni All-Star Blowout:

1. Playing Unrest, then Personal & the Pizzas for Chrysta. She just got engaged and that’s a sweet thing. She’s going to be very happy.
2. Amber spinning tunes. She played the jam of the night – Anita Garbo’s Miracles. It’s a crazy Swedish discopop song from the late 70s with strings by Jeff Lynne and a crazy Sparks-like feel. So damn good!
3. People staying until the club turned all the lights on and kicked us out. It was awesome and I hope the same thing happens when we all get together again on September 21st at Savoy!

Here’s what Fred, Amber and Tim (me) played:

The Carpenters – Yesterday Once More

Well, it was a long night but we made it. Played a small set of Prince-soundalikes, which was cool. Pulled off a bunch of insane transitions, which was also cool. Had some people dancing, which made it all worthwhile! In case you didn’t make it out (or if you were there and wondered what the hell was going on), here’s what we played. Come out on the 31st to hear more ridiculous pop jams…

As a bonus for reading all the way to the bottom, here’s a stone cold P/NP jam from Prince sidekick André Cymone called “Kelly’s Eyes”. Once he left Prince’s band, sometime after Dirty Mind since that’s the inner sleeve (?) up there, he made three really good albums and married Jody Watley. Nice one! He also burned himself deep into my young brain by wearing see-thru plastic pants when Prince played on American Bandstand about 100 years ago. I think Prince was wearing thigh high boots and leopard-print briefs under a raincoat. How did that ever make it on the air anyway? And why wasn’t “Kelly’s Eyes” a huge hit?

Our first night at the Savoy was a success. At the end of the night lots of sweaty people filed out of the club and into the steamy Ypsilanti streets…what more could you want really? The vibe was secret pop treehouse with kids rocking the dancefloor, lounging on couches, playing Galaga, and pondering the stripper poles (don’t ask!) in wonder as Fred and I tooks turns at the controls, trading off like the Hart Foundation. Here’s what we played (in no particular order):
